Example progs

Congratulations to everyone for working so hard on this library. It certainly
seems to cover most of the functionality that one would need.

I think what we are really lacking is some very simple programs to show what
the library is capable of to us novices who haven't got the time to delve
into the depths of every function. 

A few shell programs would help me out no end.
