Sorry I was not talking specifically about he file handles here, but rather
for issues such as discussed in other threads where return paramaters are not
currently updated by error conditions.

While this can be argued to be the wrong behaviour and should be fixed, this
could lead to a problem in code that relies on the current behaviour, but if
you dont have the source you wont be aware that it could be a problem.
Therefor to maintain strick binary compaibility you would have to spawn a new
function for any fixes such as these.

No, dont enscourage me look for anything contentious!
