I was just refering to the use of '<' and '>', which Druck then pointed
out shouldn't really be used for non-ANSI files unless you want a load
of compiler warnings

I believe (and I've only come across) two similar layouts:
1) The Acorn style which uses spaces (typically to pad to 8 spaces) to
space out/layout rules etc.
2) The Unix style which uses tabs in the place of spaces.
You'll find that the OSLib makefiles use the former whereas Director
uses the later.
And the Acorn make command line program (called 'amu' and not 'make' :-))
does understand both styles.
