Looking back, the !ReadMe *does* mention the setting of the variables by
double-clicking the !OSLib directory. It does so in the large
information block headed "Directory structure".

This is exactly the effect you feared: people who want to get down to
the business of building (like me) turn directly to the section headed
"Building OSLib under RISC OS [or Unix/Linux]", and skip the extra
information in the previous section.

So I still want to suggest changing:

To build OSLib "out of the box", under RISC OS, all that is necessary is to
double-click on the 'Make' TaskObey, which will look after the entire build
process and place a distributable OSLib in the 'release' sub-directory.

To something like:

To build OSLib "out of the box" under RISC OS, first double-click
!OsLib. This will set various environment variables and open the
directory. Next, all that is necessary is to double-click on the 'Make'
TaskObey, which will look after the entire build process and place a
distributable OSLib in the 'release' sub-directory.

if only for didactic effect.
